A Definition Of The Time-Honored and Life-Altering Catholic Holidays of Easter and Pentecost
Catholic Church, My JourneyHave you ever wondered about Easter Sunday and Pentecost? Most have. Well, Easter is the Catholic commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus, and Pentecost is the birthdate of the Catholic church. Both holy days are important, but, it is a bad idea to start at this point, because the narrative commences prior to this. Around age thirty, the Lord began his public ministry, teaching and pubicly speaking in the countryside of Galilee. His message was about loving God and other people. His message was sweeping, and he made the claim that not only was he the Messiah, but he was also God’s Only Son. These claims did not endear him to the spiritual high-ups and secular authorities at the time. When Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem, the people welcomed him as royalty, but by the end of the week, he was crucified, and died on the cross, an happening celebrated on Good Friday. We aren’t quite to Pentecost just yet, but be patient!
However, the narrative didn’t stop there. The Bible (specifically the four gospels) teaches that the Lord was resurrected three days later, on Easter. The resurrection that occurred on the first Easter was in body, i.e. Jesus Christ rose from the dead in his same body; it was not some spiritual body. Even though he rose in body, his resurrection was more than just a being brought back from the dead, and the Lord’s resurrected body had powers and abilities that our bodies don’t possess. Mary Magdalene was the first witness to this miraculous event, and she spread the word to the apostles, that in turn told the whole known world about it. Since the resurrection proved Jesus was the Son of God, and vindicated his teachings, the resurrection became the keystone of Christian life.
Thus, Easter is one of the earliest and most major Christian holy days. It was called the “queen of feasts” and is commemorated based on the moon’s movements. It changes each year because of this. In the Church, the liturgical color is white, and shouts of “alleluia” are overheard throughout the period. The season begins on Saturday evening with the venerable Easter Vigil, in which new converts join into Church and are baptized and/or Confirmed. The service frequently goes on for manhy hours, and in the early Church lasted from night until dawn. Secular customs include Easter eggs, Easter candy, and the Easter bunny. Many of these customs are connected to the fact that Easter occurs in the springtime, as rabbits and eggs are symbols of fertility and renewal.
Jesus returned to heaven forty days after Easter, and the Apostles were puzzled and disheartened. For the next nine days they prayed enthusiastically, and on the 50th day after Jesus’ resurrection, the Holy Spirit came down upon the apostles. The Bible said languages of fire descended upon them, and their speeches were overheard by all present in each individual’s native tongue. The Apostles were so infused with the Holy Ghost on this 1st Pentecost that scoffers believed the disciples were intoxicated. It was on this day that the Catholic Church began. All of this is told of in the Book of Acts.
The Catholic Church celebrates Pentecost fifty days after Easter. The church color is scarlet, symbolic of the flame that rested upon the Apostles. The dual themes of the Holy Spirit and the Church are commemorated, because of the original theme of the holiday. It was one of the traditional periods of baptism in the Church, and is often called Whitsunday in a lot of English-speaking churches.
